Help Women and Children Now

This year introduced our first annual Home Run Derby fundraiser which will primarily benefit families in medical need in the Haddonfield area. We look forward to giving back to the community that has giving so generously to our organization over the past 5 years.

During our first Derby, kids participated in a fun competition of baseball slugging with some hits, some big hits and some hits that went back, back, back..GONE!

The top hitter in each age category received an autographed Carlos Ruiz baseball.

Home Runs Helps Families in Haddonfield

HADDONFIELD, N.J. (CBS) – In Camden County, it’s outta here! Or maybe it’s just a pop fly. But hey, it doesn’t matter! Young batters are swinging for the fences for a good cause.

“This is for families in medical crisis or need,” said Lisa Hurley.

She has been helping families in need for five years, after her newborn son Stephen died from heart disease in 2003.

“We just hope with what we do, we hope we can help other families, both from awareness and raise money and help them avoid what we went through with our son,” Lisa said.

In Haddonfield last week, batters paid $20 for 10 tries to hit it out of the park. The money will help women and children in medical crisis in South Jersey.

Lisa, along with friend Eny Christianson, says doing something with the kids was an added bonus.

“I thought this was great,” said Christianson, “because my son is big in sports, and kids aspire to be as the big guys are on TV, so I thought this would be a good time for them to shine.”

And they did shine, even though an errant ball almost broke our camera!

Between the raffle items, like autographed jerseys and other sports memorabilia, 11-year-old Christian Dinoia summed it up nicely.

“I love to do this,” Christian said. “It’s really fun, I love baseball and I love helping people.”

The goal of the home run derby was to raise $10,000. In five years, Lisa and her organization, Help Women and Children Now, has raised more than $200,000 for families with medical needs.

Thank you everyone for supporting the Haddonfiled Home Run Derby.

Kids ages 8-12 came for a fun night of baseball hitting. We had some grounders, some big hits and some went back, back, back... gone!
